Consolations of Memory is a guided cemetery walk of the area surrounding Hotchkiss Chapel. Each year we focus on a different topic that relates to life, death and mourning in the mid 19th Century. During the tour guests will learn about the tragic events in St Louis history, funeral and burial practices, how the dead were remembered and the lives of those left behind to mourn the loss. The tour is followed immediately by a funeral reenactment, procession and burial service.
Our 2019 tour will focus on the history and development of 19th Century rural cemeteries and will be followed by the 1866 funeral of Maurice D Blaine.
Tours will take place at 10am, 12pm and 2pm. Registration for this free event will open in early September. Space is limited so make sure to follow us on Facebook for updates!
