Who We Are: Deborah

The Mourning Society wouldn’t be anything if it weren’t for an amazing group of volunteers that make our events so special. We’ll be shining a spotlight on our members throughout the fall season.

💀 How long have you been a member of the Mourning Society of St Louis and how did you get started? I'm not sure! I was already a Civil War reenactor and met a lot of the members when we used to do historic craft nights.

💀 What role do you play in the group? Because I live out of town, I tend to pop in and out. I like to help where needed, but I prefer to avoid major speaking roles. I am usually there to provide atmosphere or to help direct visitors to where the speakers are.

💀 What is your favorite Mourning Society event? I love anything at Bellefontaine Cemetery, but I also enjoy the Bissell House events. It’s pretty cool to be at the Botanical Garden too. Basically I love anything on original ground.

💀 What is your favorite topic that we cover at events? All of them! I love how every person has an opportunity to explore their own area of expertise, whether it is hair jewelry, historic crafts, fashion, funeral customs, or debunking myths.
